Every Saturday afternoon from May through September, Rocking the Boat brings its boats down to the Bronx River waterfront at Hunts Point Riverside Park to offer free rowing to the public. Over 2,000 community members from children as young as two, to junior high and high school students, to adults and senior citizens, board Rocking the Boat's boats, try their hand at rowing, and receive guided tours of the beautiful Bronx River. Environmental Apprentices in the Job Skills Program manage Community Rowing. Gaining excellent work experience, the Apprentices develop and lead the programs which consist of general, recreational outings as well as more tightly structured tours focused on such themes as Bronx River history or ecology. Shore fishing and other land-based environmental activities round out the Community Rowing Program. Rocking the Boat has all the equipmentpoles, nets, and wadersnecessary for a great day of catch-and-release fishing. And the Apprentices always take pleasure in displaying their 10-gallon "specimen tank", filled with creatures they scooped from the Bronx River. They expertly and enthusiastically explain the rich diversity of life inhabiting their local waterway, and their role in making the river healthier. |
