It's Boat Launch Time!

The month of June will be a busy one at Rocking the Boat. We will be completing two traditional all wooden Whitehalls and holding three launches for them in three different bodies of water.
First, on Saturday, June 12, the Bronx Boatbuilders and On-Water students will celebrate the completion of the 17-foot Whitehall they spent the semester building. The Rocking the Boat community will gather at the Cement Plant on the banks of the Bronx River to hold a great big party.
Later that same week, on Wednesday evening, June 16, as the highlight of the The New York Harbor School's year end celebration, The Harbor School Boatbuilding Program will be launching its first boat, a 14-foot Whitehall, off the side of the four masted barque Peking into the East River. This will be an unique opportunity for Rocking the Boat students and community members from the Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn to come together and celebrate boatbuilding across the City.
Then, the following weekend, on Saturday, June 19th, as part of Clearwater's Great Hudson River Revival, Rocking the Boat will again launch the 17-foot Bronx-built Whitehall. This time it will go into the Hudson River for the benefit of its new owners, the Save Esopus Lighthouse Commission, to whom Rocking the Boat is giving its newest creation. In the past six years Rocking the Boat has built ten boats which it uses to run a wide range of environmental science and maritime skills programs for over 400 students a year on the Bronx River. We now have as many as we need to run all of our programming! However, Save Esopus Lighthouse Commission needs a ferryboat to get to their lighthouse, so we thought this would be a great place for one of our boats to land. And this is a particularly wonderful destination for Rocking the Boat, as our students have spent lots of time on the Scenic Hudson Esopus Meadows property, and have even harvested a white oak tree used for frames for last year's boat.
So come out and join us at any of these three events during what will be a very exciting week at Rocking the Boat.
