What's New at Rocking the Boat Fall 2004

Following the launch of our 13th boat and the culmination of Bronx River On-Water programming on December 22nd, Rocking the Boat will take a two month hiatus from regular after school programming. After the past five years of experimenting with different schedules, we have found a stable programming structure, which includes two months of winter "down time."

But January and February will by no means be quiet. Though it will be a time for our staff to regenerate and plan for the spring semester, it will also allow us a chance to do many of the things we have no time for in our regular daily programming. Our own licensed instructors will certify all Rocking the Boat students in CPR, First Aid, and Boating Safety. As well, in order to maintain student connection during the winter break, we will be holding weekly Friday movie nights, screening a wider range of films than our students could find at local theaters.

A great effort will also be put into developing individual fundraising and boatbuilding initiatives. At the end of January, we will be holding our Winter Fundraiser. Anyone who has been to any of our past events knows how much fun they are as well as how vital they are in sustaining Rocking the Boat. Another strategy is to experiment with offering adult boatbuilding classes. We are starting off small this winter and will be holding a weekend kayak paddlemaking course in February. This will be a wonderful opportunity to involve new people in Rocking the Boat, while helping to support the organization. People are also welcome to join us as we design our first true sailboat, to be built during the spring 2005 semester.

So during the dark and cold months of the year, dare to venture out and join us. We will be busy as always, building not only wooden boats, but what has become the most unique and exciting youth development organization in New York City.
